Update.
http://www.inciweb.org/incident/article/2225/11410/
40% contained
55,000 acres
Sunday May 29, 2011 size now 59,500 acres. Burning on west side of area into Turkey Creek 40% conatined. The bird area is safe and looks like it will escape unharmed. In fact the map shows that area almost completely surrounded by the fire. It is a miracle it did not burn.

Re: Chiricahua Mountains - FIRE!
The majority of birding areas near Portal have burned. I consider Cave Creek as the major birding place, but that is only a small part of it. If you look at the fire map, it looks like almost the entire sky island is going to burn off. I can see this fire easily going over 100,000 acres before all is said and done. This is a tragic and preventable loss. The fire was human caused. 10 Hot-Shot crews and 9 hand crews can not do the job. The fire is burning into many places at once. This fire may well burn untill the monsoonal rains come, which may be to late for the mountain. Currently high winds, high heat and low humidity are indicated for the near term weather. Very bad for fire fighting.
Fire map as of June 3, 2011.

Re: Chiricahua Mountains - FIRE!
I am afraid you are right, this is too depressing for words.
