5 Nights on the River(Plan B)

Post by yuccahead »

We had this canoe trip down the Green River through Canyonlands NP planned for several months, actually a couple of years. We wanted to get it in a year ago but other things came up and it was postponed to this summer. Well, Mother Nature had other ideas and four days before we were to put-in at Mineral Bottom for a 52 mile trip down the Green to the confluence, it rained...hard. Check this link for a picture and story about the steep, switchbacks into the Mineral Bottom boat ramp.

So, onto Plan B, either launching from Ruby Ranch another 47 miles upriver and paddling 20 miles a day or paddle the Colorado at less than 10 a day. We opted for the lazy route and set out down the Colorado River.

The Colorado has much more boating traffic, commercial tour boats and commercial raft trips and with the Green closed at Mineral several other canoe and kayak groups chose to paddle it as well. Despite the extra boats and people we had a great time, the weather was gorgeous, mornings and evenings were glorious. We were moving so slowly and stopping at every interesting place that the other boaters would pass us quickly and we ended up staying behind the masses anyway.
Anyway here are pictures from this trip.

We played Sunrise Roulette every morning, I nailed it the first day, short-lived however, my wife won the rest of the week.

Every side canyon we tried to stop at was a muddy washout from the recent rains and floods. This is the debris filled mouth of Shafer Canyon.

My wife in The Grotto. The Moab Music Festival uses this natural amphitheatre as a concert venue...to the tune of $300.00 a ticket.

I hiked up on the rim from this little beach, my wife is napping in the shade behind the canoe.

The last evening clouded up and we got a little sunset color on the clouds

It rained the last morning. We were a mile and a half from the confluence and we elected to stay at our last camp and wait for the jet boat pick-up.

Looking up at canyon walls through the canoes strapped to the jet boat.

A shot of the jet boat as it lines up to load on the truck trailer and head for home.

Thanks for taking a look.

yh – Thanks for sharing. I imagine Sunrise Roulette can be quite challenging considering the canyon walls.

Yeah, it can be. DAL is a huge factor.

It's the only way out for canoes. A 2 hour trip that just took you 5 days, nice way to end.

Thanks for taking a look everyone.

My wife and I are adventure lovers by heart. I would love to have the same trip as yours and maybe play sunset roulette too :)

by the way, we are a tight budget couple, I'm jsut wondering how much did it cost you to have this trip. I would really love to do this, hope a reply I can get from you. Thanks

The cost can vary. We own our own canoe and gear plus we live right near the river so we really only had to pay for the jet boat pickup and a $20.00 permit to enter Canyonlands NP.
Here is a link to Tex's Riverways in Moab. They rent canoes/kayaks, gear and toilet systems and run the jet boat pickups and shuttles.
