Hi There:

My wife and I drove down to Sells on Friday, June 11th and visited the Desert Rain Cafe. We really enjoyed our meal and visit. The preparation of the desert plants into a meal by the Tohono O'odham is really done by real experts. We first enjoyed a variety of free samples before we ordered a meal. My wife had Prickley Pear chicken smoothed in Cholla buds. The Cholla buds taste was somewhere between artichokes and asparagus. I had Tepary bean chile carne. The beef had no preservatives and was fresh. I had corn bread made from Mesquite flour and Indian corn. The corn bread was good, but different. Little or no salt was use in the preparation of this food. You will have to try it and decide for yourself. The cafe is absolutely spotless and clean. The cafe and products are produced and distributed by the Tohono O'Odam Community Action. TOCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing a healthy sustainable and culturally vital Tohono O'Odam Community. The cafe has been open for over a year.
This is our truck parked in front of the Desert Rain Cafe. Our yellow lab made the trip with us and also enjoyed a snack from the cafe.

I might add, the Tohono O'Odham in general treated us very politely and we enjoyed our stay in Sells. We also enjoyed chatting with the Gallery curator who also enjoyed telling us about the area, culture and people.

Take care,

Tom K.
