You take the Joshua tree turn off from the 10 south and follow it down almost to Mecca on the right you will see a sign for the Painted Desert, follow it to the end. It is an OK road no 4wd needed but it's dirt. We come from the Palm Springs side which I think is south and west. We actually live in Borrego Springs.
